Insulation Removal in San Francisco & the Bay Area

Vacuum extraction and safe disposal of damaged, wet, moldy, rodent-contaminated or failed insulation — spray foam, blown-in, batts — from attics and crawl spaces, followed by sanitizing and prep for new insulation.

When Insulation Needs to Come Out

Insulation does not last forever. Roof leaks soak it, rodents nest and urinate in it, decades of settling compress it, and badly installed spray foam can shrink, pull away or hold moisture against the framing. Once insulation is wet, contaminated or failed it stops insulating and starts causing problems — odors, allergens, mold and heat loss. USA Spray Me removes it safely, cleans and sanitizes the space, and prepares it for new insulation — either as a standalone service or as the first phase of a re-insulation package.

We serve homeowners, landlords, property managers and commercial facilities throughout San Francisco and the Bay Area.

Signs You Need Insulation Removal

  • Rodent droppings, nests, urine staining or odors in the attic or crawl space
  • Water stains, damp or matted insulation after roof or plumbing leaks
  • Visible mold or a musty smell coming from vents
  • Insulation that has settled to 3 inches or less, or is crumbling
  • Failed, shrunken or odorous spray foam from a bad installation
  • Pre-remodel or pre-solar work that requires a clean attic
  • Pest-control or electrical contractors who need clear access
  • Old vermiculite or other suspect material (we coordinate testing before disturbance)

Our Removal Process

  • Inspection and quote — we identify the material, contamination level, access and any hazards and give you a written price.
  • Containment — floors, walls and HVAC returns are protected; negative-air equipment is used where contamination is heavy.
  • Vacuum extraction — a truck-mounted or portable high-powered insulation vacuum removes loose-fill and batts through a 6-inch hose directly into sealed bags outside the house. Spray foam is mechanically cut and scraped.
  • Cleanup and sanitizing — HEPA vacuuming of joists and decking, then an antimicrobial treatment for rodent or mold contamination.
  • Repairs and prep — we flag damaged wiring, ducts or wood, seal rodent entry points, air-seal the attic floor and install baffles ready for new insulation.
  • Disposal — material is bagged, hauled and disposed of legally the same day.

Removal and Replacement in One Visit

Because we install spray foam, blown-in and fiberglass, we can remove the old insulation in the morning and install new code-compliant insulation the same or next day — one crew, one contract, one warranty. Bundled removal-and-replace projects qualify for our $250 discount on orders over $2,500.

Cost of Insulation Removal

Attic insulation removal in the Bay Area typically runs $1–$2 per square foot for loose-fill and batts, more for heavy rodent contamination or spray foam. Most 1,200–1,500 sq ft attics are cleared in half a day. We quote exactly after a free inspection.

Insulation Removal FAQs

Why would insulation need to be removed?

Moisture damage, mold, rodent or pest contamination, age and compression, poor installation, or to give clean access for remodeling, electrical, solar or pest-control work.

Can spray foam insulation be removed safely?

Yes, by professionals. Cured foam is cut and scraped mechanically, which creates dust, so we use containment, respirators and HEPA vacuums. It is more labor-intensive than removing loose-fill.

What types of insulation do you remove?

Blown-in cellulose and fiberglass, fiberglass and mineral wool batts, spray foam, rigid board and rodent-contaminated or water-damaged material of any kind from attics, crawl spaces and walls.

How long does insulation removal take?

A typical attic takes 3–6 hours; heavily contaminated or spray-foam attics a full day or more. Crawl spaces are similar depending on access.

Can you remove only part of the insulation?

Yes — we remove damaged or contaminated sections for localized repairs and protect the rest.

What happens after the insulation is removed?

We HEPA-vacuum, sanitize for rodent or mold contamination, seal entry points, air-seal and prep the space, then install new insulation if you choose a replacement package.

Do you remove crawl space insulation too?

Yes — fallen, wet or rodent-damaged crawl space batts are one of our most common removals, usually followed by closed-cell spray foam on the subfloor.

How much does insulation removal cost?

Typically $1–$2 per square foot for attic loose-fill or batts, higher for contamination or spray foam. We provide a free inspection and written quote.
